This was taken from a forum member named Draco on this site. Please read it as it is a wonderful description of how to rp.
Notes to keep in mind:
You can’t go to a place, find an enemy, fight it, all in one posting. Dreamland does not have the complicated rules that most RP forums have, but we do expect you to thoroughly think out process that every action your character will do and the post you make adds to the story. You can bring in a monster and kill it, that’s fine, but the monsters that others bring in like bosses or puzzles take reasonable efforts by all players in defeating or completing the task.
Avoid simple one-line descriptions of action if you can help it.
Example: Marvin walks into a room and sees a girl, he slaps the girl and the girl runs away.
Try to expand on the situation:
1.) What is the room like?
2.) What is in the room?
3.) What does the girl look like? ( is she pretty, ugly, fat, then, etc.)
4.) Why did you decide to slap her?
5.) Should you chase her?
6.) What are your thoughts at the time on why on what purpose of the slapping?
Of course don’t go insane and explain every little detail like the number of bricks on the wall, but as long as it relates to the story at the time and your character development. You can elaborate.
Showing and describing efforts and context help progress the story and give the other person something to play with. There is also no invincible character, you engage the enemy by yourself you'll expect some injuries. Otherwise explain why you are so powerful or how you've avoided every attack. Be realistic people.
There is no power playing or god modding or something like that. That means you cannot control another persons character.
If you are going to RP then please be serious about it. You can joke around once in awhile.
Good example:
First post: Marvin walks inside the dark cave and hears a grunting sound.
"This doesn't seem right. Is someone there?"
Next post: Jake follows Marvin into the cave but runs a little further then him and finds a large Cat like monster.
"Marvin! Attack! Help!"
OOC: lol Cat monster I couldn't think of anything else.
Another RP Example:
Marvin un-sheathes his sword and holds it at a angle where the sun flickered off it like a majestic glow. He then reaches into his bag and pulls out a sharpening stone and starts running it down the blade. Sparks fly from the blade and light up the evening sky as the sun begins to set. When a ear-piercing scream is heard in the distance sounding through the forest like a gong. Marvin stands up and places the stone in his bag and stabs the sword back into his sheath. He places his helmet back on his head and turns to the others:
“Come, lets go. Time to finish this”
Marvin Starts sprinting into the direction of the castle and the scream, hoping that it did not mean the worse for his comrade.

The scream could have been the poster above you so there for you progressed the story, had detail, and did not control anyone else’s character.
